Both teams were rated in the top ten in the state. In one poll they were tied for 9th. In another, Fulton was 8th. Fulton was undefeated and Morristown was 9 and 1. Morristown had an  8 game winning streak in 67 and a 58 game non-conference winning streak. Fulton won the game 27-6 with a 16 point 4th quarter surge. The Fulton offense put up 356 yards in total offense while the Fulton defense held Morristown to net rushing yardage of zero. The impressive Fulton victory over Morristown broke a 58 game non-conference winning streak by Morristown. All-State Linebacker Jackie Walker was the defensive MVP and quarterback Larry Brock was named the offensive MVP. The 1967 Fulton High School Falcons remain the only undefeated football team in the schools history.

Fulton lost 19 seniors from the 8-3 1966 team and the 1967 was to be a rebuilding year.

Fulton cruised in it’s season opener with Rule 45-7 scoring 25 points in the 4th quarter.

Then Fulton shutout Sevier County and Powell before matching up with undefeated and #3 ranked Central.

Fulton beat Central 7-0 with a 10 yard 4th quarter run by quarterback Larry Brock to score the games only TD.

 

In the Central game Jackie Walker made 33 tackles, 17 solo, to be named KFL defensive player of the week.

 

Fulton was the only team to beat Powell during regular season. Powel finished the regular season 9-1 (Larry Stephens, who would later coach at Powell played for Powell that year).

 

Only 77 points was scored against Fulton in 11 games for an average of less than a touchdown per game.

 

No team ever scored on the right ride of the 1967 Falcon defense the entire year. Randy Wood was the cornerback and Gary Raley was the safety

 

Fulton averaged 19.6 points a game on offense.

 

Fulton prevented 4 teams from scoring with 4 defensive shutouts. Sevier County (6-0), Powell (19-0), Central (7-0), Oliver Springs (28-0).

 

Against Bearden Butch Sprain blocked 4 punts and caused a safety, to be named KFL defensive player of the week.

 

Fullback Ed Taylor scampered 82 yards for the winning touchdown in the 14-13 Fulton victory over Oak Ridge.

 

Captain Skipper Bean blocked an Oak Ridge extra point attempt giving Fulton a 14-13 victory over Oak Ridge.

 

Jackie Walker put at least 2 players in the “hospital” in 1967 with brutal hits.

 

  • In the Rule game Jim Brannam was sweeping wide when Walker caught him alone at the line of scrimmage knocking him out cold. Their was a collective gasp of a large crowd at Fulton’s home field because the hit was so hard. Brannam lay motionless until he was help off the field. Brannam was taken to the hospital and could not finish the game.
  • In addition, Jackie Walker made “the hit” on Sutton which sounded like a gunshot knocking Sutton out and putting him in the hospital for a couple of days.

 

Steve Sparks ate a light bulb at half time during a game to motivate team.

 

Butch Sprain use to do back flips over the ball in full game equipment during games. Coach Herzbrun took him out of the game to tell him not to do that until their was a lead.

 

In a preseason scrimmage with Maryville, Butch Sprain was so quick into the backfield of Maryville that he actually got the ball from the Maryville quarterback twice as he was attempting to hand it off and returned it for 2 Fulton TDs. After that Maryville did not run any more offensive plays because they wanted to figure out how Sprain was getting into their backfield so quick.

 

Fulton beat 9th rated Morristown in the Optimist Bowl 27-6.

 

In the 1967 Optimist Bowl Fulton had 354 yard total offense with 2 touchdown passes by Larry Brock to David Holt.

 

Morristown was held to a net rushing yardage of “0.”

 

The 1967 Falcons broke a 58 game non-conference and 8 game regular season winning streak by Morristown with a 27-6 victory over Morristown in the Optimist Bowl.

 

Jackie Walker was selected to first team All-state and went on to become an All-American linebacker at UT setting the all time NCAA career interception for touchdown record at 5 and had two others called back in one game.

 

David Mize, Skipper Bean and Butch Spain were honorable mention All-State.
