THE 1967 UNDEFEATED FULTON FALCON “MIGHTY MITES” TO BE HONORED AT CSS GAME OF THE WEEK AS FULTON AND OAK RIDGE MATCH UP IN A CLASH OF WINNING TRADITIONS

           KNOXVILLE – On Friday August 31, 2007 at 7:30pm Buck Coatney’s defending 3A State Champion Fulton Falcons shall take the field against 5A traditional powerhouse, the Oak Ridge Wildcats on Fulton High’s Bob Black Field in Knoxville. The game has been selected as the CSS regional game of the week and named by the Knoxville Sentinel as one of the top games in the state of Tennessee.
           Fulton High School shall honor the 1967 Fulton Falcons as the only undefeated football team in the 56 year history of Fulton High. Lon Herzbrun, head coach and assistant Coaches Bob Black and Buddy Beam for the 1967 team will be recognized by Governor Bredesen for their contribution to high school football. Many of the players on the 1967 Fulton team will be present including captains Skipper Bean and Steve Sparks, Herb Newton, Butch Sprain, David Mize, Ed Taylor, David Holt, Gary Raley, Vince Ingle, Ernie Tracy, Fred Paterson, Doug Young and others.
             During the Oak Ridge game Fulton High will wear replica throwback jerseys to 1967 to honor the 1967 “mighty mites.” According to Russell Mayes, Fulton assistant coach and voice of the Falcons on WKCS 91.1 FM, “The 1967 Fulton Falcons overcame injuries, inexperience, and lack of size to become the only team in Fulton history to complete an undefeated season. Coach Lon Herzbrun’s Mighty Mites truly represent one of the greatest chapters in Fulton football history.”
            Fulton High’s head coach, Buck Coatney, is in his 16th year of coaching at Fulton and was an All-State Linebacker at Fulton in his playing days. Coatney has led his Falcons to three State Championships in the past four years winning it all in 2003, 2004, and 2006. Coach Stanton Stevens shall bring his Oak Ridge Wildcats to Knoxville seeking to recapture some of the great winning tradition that Oak Ridge Wildcats stand for. Oak Ridge has won several State Championships and won the National Championship in 1958.

RADIO DOCUMENTARY ON THE MAKING OF A “WINNING TRADITION” TO AIR LIVE ON FOUR LOCAL RADIO STATIONS AND WILL BROADCAST GLOBALLY ON THE INTERNET – SHOW TO HAVE MOTIVATIONAL MESSAGE

           KNOXVILLE – On Thursday August 30, 2007 at from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm the Horne Radio Network (www.horneradionetwork.com) will host a two hour radio special on what it takes to be a winner and to turn winning into a tradition. The Fulton High School Falcon’s tradition of winning and their coaches will be featured on the special.

The undefeated 1967 Fulton Falcon “mighty mites” may rank among the most legendary football teams in East Tennessee football lore and clearly the current Fulton Falcons are one of the best football programs in the state of Tennessee playing for the State Championships 5 out of the last 6 years. In fact, Fulton’s head coach, Buck Coatney, brought Knoxville its first back-to-back State Championships ever winning the 3A State Championship in 2003 and 2004.

“Winning Tradition” shall interview Coaches Lon Herzbrun, Buddy Beam, Bob Black  from the 1967 team which is the only undefeated team  in the history of Fulton High School. On addition, the radio special shall discuss what made Buck Coatney’s “go to work” 2003, 2004, and 2006 State Champions the winners they were. Bob Black has coach at Fulton through it all with 43 years of service as Fulton’s offensive and defensive line coach.

            According to Coach Lon Herbrun, head coach at Fulton from 1963 to 1968 and former University of Tennessee player and Coach, “The ingredients necessary to winning are timeless. It is the same now as it was 40 years ago. It is about pride, discipline, determination and hard work. But, more that anything it gets down to desire... who wants it the most. That’s the big difference between a champion and an also run. Winners believe they can win and never ever give up.”

“Winning Tradition” shall air on WKVL 850 AM (Knoxville) WLOD-AM 1140 (Loudon), WATO-AM 1290 (Oak Ridge), and WGAP-AM 1400, (Maryville) as well as on TalkRadioToday.com for global internet broadcast. Russell Mayes, Tim Parker, and Douglas Young will share the hosting duties on the show.

The Fulton Falcons will match up against traditional powerhouse Oak Ridge Wildcats on Friday August 31st at 7:30 pm at Bob Black Field in one of the biggest games in the state. The game is the regional game of the week and will be televised on CSS.
